Wire Seals and Wires

We manufacture a diverse line of tamper-evident seals for use with wire. Wire seals are ideal for applications requiring seals to fit through small closures. Choose from plastic wire seals, aluminum and wire security seals, lead security seals, sealing wires, and lead and aluminum seal presses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wire seals, also called lead seals or cut wire seals, are used to secure valves, meter boxes, electrical panels, calibration equipment, and access points where a lightweight, flexible, tamper-evident closure is needed. A wire is threaded through the locking point, then fed into a small lead or aluminum seal body that is crimped shut with a seal press. They are widely used by utilities, aviation, oil and gas operations, government agencies, and any operation where a press-imprinted identifier is required for regulatory documentation.

A hybrid variation using a plastic body and metal wire, such as the PSW type, is popular in many of the same applications. These seals do not require a press. The locking mechanism is built in, and a simple plunger is pushed manually to lock the wire securely inside the plastic body.

Installation requires a seal press, which is a hand-operated crimping tool that locks the wire inside the seal body by deforming the metal around it. Thread the wire through your locking point, whether a valve handle, meter hasp, or cabinet latch, feed both ends through the seal body, and apply the press firmly to crimp it closed. The seal body can be die-stamped with an ID number or logo at the time of crimping, creating a unique, tamper-evident record specific to that installation.

Lead seal bodies are the traditional standard. They crimp easily, hold wire securely, and accept die-stamped impressions for identification numbers or logos. Aluminum bodies are increasingly preferred where lead content is a regulatory concern, particularly in food, pharmaceutical, or water utility environments, as they are non-toxic while offering comparable crimping performance. Both are available in standard sizes to fit the spooled wire diameters we carry.

Wire seals are available in a range of diameters, typically from around 0.6 mm up to heavier gauges for higher-security applications. Material options include standard steel wire, galvanized wire for corrosion resistance, and stainless steel for demanding chemical or marine environments. We also supply spooled cut wire in bulk for operations that cut their own lengths on-site. Contact us with your seal body size and application to confirm the right wire gauge match.

Wire seals are indicative-class devices and are not designed to resist forced removal with tools. A wire cutter can defeat one quickly, but that is precisely the point. Cutting a wire seal is immediately obvious, creates a clear record of access, and requires re-sealing with a new numbered seal. For applications requiring ISO 17712 High Security classification, such as international ocean container shipping, a certified bolt seal or cable seal is required instead.

Yes. The seal body can be die-stamped at the time of crimping with sequential numbers, initials, department codes, or custom logos. This is standard practice in utility metering and oil and gas, where the seal impression serves as a regulatory record of who sealed the equipment and when. American Casting and Manufacturing carries standard and custom dies; contact us for available options and lead times.

A complete program requires wire seal bodies in lead or aluminum, the wire that threads through the locking point, and a seal press for crimping. AC&M supplies all three, along with cable and bolt seal cutters for authorized removal at destination. For a new setup, specify the wire gauge, seal body size, and whether you want pre-cut wire or bulk spooled wire. Sample kits are available so you can test the assembly before committing to a full order.
