Frequently Asked Questions

A seal press is a hand-operated crimping tool that closes and embosses lead or aluminum seal bodies onto wire seals. The press deforms the metal body around the wire, locking it permanently in place, and simultaneously stamps an identifying mark such as a logo, number, or department code onto the seal using interchangeable dies. It is the core tool for any wire seal program in utilities, oil and gas, government, and inspection applications where a lead or aluminum wire seal is required.

American Casting and Manufacturing offers two seal presses: the Bulldog Seal Press in a 5-inch model and the 8-inch EZ Seal Press. Both are designed to close and emboss seals using interchangeable 1/2-inch diameter dies. The 5-inch press is best suited for lead seals but can also be used with aluminum. The 8-inch EZ Seal Press is ideal for aluminum seals or for higher-frequency pressing of lead seals with less operator fatigue. Die sets are interchangeable and removable with a set screw, and are available blank or engraved with letters, numbers, or logos. Both presses are compact and field-ready, practical for technicians to carry on route. For higher daily volumes, a bench-mounted setup using the same press body is a reliable option.

The key factors are the metal type and frequency of use. For aluminum seals or high-volume applications, the 8-inch EZ Seal Press is the stronger choice. For lead seals or lower-volume applications, the 5-inch Bulldog Seal Press is well suited. You should also consider the seal body diameter you are working with, as both presses use interchangeable 1/2-inch diameter dies that can be swapped to match your specific seal.

Interchangeable dies are engraved inserts that fit inside the seal press jaw and stamp an impression onto the seal body at the time of crimping. They are removable with a set screw, allowing one press to serve multiple departments or applications with different identification codes. Custom-engraved dies can carry letters, numbers, logos, or department codes, which is especially important for utility and oil and gas programs where the seal impression serves as a regulatory record. Custom die orders typically ship within 10 business days.

A complete program requires the seal bodies in lead or aluminum, the wire or cable that threads through the locking point, a cutting tool for wire preparation, and a dedicated cutter for authorized seal removal at destination. AC&M supplies all of these, including cable seal cutters and bolt seal cutters for high-security applications. Ordering presses, dies, wire, and seal bodies together as a kit ensures all components are compatible before you begin sealing in the field.

The correct removal tool depends on the seal type. Plastic pull-tight seals and wire seals cut with wire snips or side-cutters. Cable seals require dedicated cable cutters for a clean cut. High-security bolt seals must be removed with industrial bolt cutters, as they are engineered to resist anything less, which is what makes them effective. Always record the serial number and inspect the removed seal for signs of prior tampering before disposal, and replace with a new numbered seal immediately.
