Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed-length seals have a preset shank that does not adjust. You insert the band into the locking head and it clicks into place at a fixed position every time. Pull-tight seals cinch down to whatever size the aperture requires. Fixed-length seals are the right choice when consistent, repeatable application is critical, such as on meter hasps or valve handles where the same locking point is sealed every time and variation would slow down inspection.

They are widely used on utility meters, fire safety equipment, pharmaceutical containers, tote boxes, and valve handles, anywhere a standardized, repeatable seal point is required. Because the strap length is predetermined, installation is fast and uniform, which makes them a strong fit for high-volume sealing programs where consistency matters for inspection and compliance documentation.

Both are indicative-class devices designed to show tampering rather than physically resist forced removal with tools. Fixed-length seals provide a slightly more tamper-resistant fit on standardized locking points because there is no adjustable strap that could be partially removed and re-engaged. For applications requiring significantly higher physical resistance, a cable seal or bolt seal is the appropriate step up.

Yes. Fixed-length plastic seals are available with sequential serial numbers, barcodes, and custom text or logos. Numbered seals are essential for any program that requires an audit trail, since each seal can be assigned to a specific shipment, container, or piece of equipment and tracked from issuance through removal. Most are molded from polypropylene or nylon, providing good resistance to moisture, mild chemicals, and temperature variation. For cold storage or refrigerated transport applications, confirm the temperature rating for the specific model, as some plastics become brittle in extreme cold. If your environment involves high UV exposure, chemical contact, or marine conditions, a metal seal or cable seal will offer better durability.

Fixed-length plastic seals fall under the ISO 17712 Indicative (Class I) classification. They provide tamper evidence but do not meet the strength requirements of Security (S) or High Security (H) classes. For international container shipping under C-TPAT or similar programs, an ISO 17712 High Security bolt seal or cable seal is required. Fixed-length plastic seals are the correct choice for domestic, lower-risk, or internal compliance applications.

Treat seals like a controlled asset. Log every serial number issued, record who applied it, where, and when, and verify every number at removal. Color coding by route, shift, or department lets field staff visually confirm the right seal is in place without consulting a log every time. American Casting and Manufacturing can supply seals in consecutive numbered batches to simplify record-keeping, and our team can advise on seal management best practices for high-volume programs.
