Bolt seals are the standard high-security sealing solution for international shipping containers, truck trailers, and rail cars. They consist of a hardened steel pin and a locking body. Once pressed together by hand, they can only be removed with industrial bolt cutters. ISO 17712 High Security (Class H)-certified bolt seals are required by customs authorities worldwide for ocean freight under C-TPAT, BASC, and most international supply chain security programs.
A bolt seal's sturdy steel pin and locking cylinder are engineered to resist the four ISO 17712 High Security test criteria: tensile pulling, shear cutting, bending, and crushing, with breaking strength typically exceeding 1,500 kg of tensile force. Unlike plastic seals that cut with snips, or lighter cable seals removed with wire cutters, a bolt seal requires industrial bolt cutters, significantly raising the effort, time, and tool barrier for anyone attempting unauthorized access.
Thread the bolt pin through both hasp locking rods on the container door, as sealing through only one rod is a common error that defeats the purpose of a high-security seal. Press the pin firmly into the locking body until it clicks and seats fully. The seal should not rotate or pull free with hand pressure. Verify the serial number is legible and undamaged, then log it against the shipment record before the container departs.
Standard bolt seals provide tamper evidence and a basic physical barrier but are not independently tested or certified. ISO 17712 High Security bolt seals must pass tensile, shear, bending, and impact resistance tests conducted by an accredited third-party laboratory, and the manufacturer must hold an independent test certificate. For domestic or lower-risk shipments a standard bolt seal may suffice, but for international freight, rail, or any C-TPAT program, the ISO 17712 (H)-certified version is required.
Yes. AC&M produces ISO 17712:2013 High Security (H)-certified bolt seals at its Plainview, New York facility. Certified seals are stamped with the letter H and the manufacturer's identity mark. We can provide the independent test certificate from an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory and Annex A conformance documentation, both of which C-TPAT partners are required to obtain from their seal suppliers before purchasing.
Yes. Bolt seals can be laser-engraved or stamped with sequential serial numbers, barcodes, and custom identifiers. Tracking is not optional for compliant programs. C-TPAT and ISO 17712 require that each seal's number be logged at the point of application and verified at the destination. Many operations integrate barcode scanning directly into their load-and-seal workflow to eliminate manual transcription errors.
