New 2023 Defense Department requirements for container shipments of military materials require all shipments to use an ISO-17712 certified seal. SDDC or Military Surface deployment and Distribution Command issued the new requirement this year due to “several instances of container seal issues and failures”. SDDC coordinates shipments by the military as well as shipments of military materials by private companies.

The SDDC rule calls for using High Security Bolt Seals, and where needed High Security Cable seals. Seals with ISO-17712 High Security certification comply with ISO performance testing, plus handling, record keeping and marking requirements. They are marked (H) for high security and must show the identity of the manufacturer. Assuring the user gets a seal that is made to the highest standards and comes from a compliant source is crucial.

Seals of high quality are an effective tool for mitigating theft and tracking shipments when properly used and monitored. High security seals are a category sometimes referred to as barrier seals. Strong tools are required to cut off a high security seal, creating a physical barrier that reduces unauthorized access to closures like container door hasps.
